Greensboro College Student Briana Thomas Wins Student Journalism Award

2013 Apr 25

Briana Thomas, a sophomore English and Communication Studies major at Greensboro College, received the Second Place Award in Photography from the N.C. College Media Association during that group's recent annual meeting. Thomas was among three Greensboro College students writing for The Collegian, the college's student newspaper, to win individual recognition.

The Collegian also won a national second prize in the college's size division from the American Scholastic Press Association for 2013. This is the third time in four years that The Collegian has received national honors from that association.

The American Scholastic Press Association, based in College Point, N.Y., holds an annual contest that honors outstanding yearbooks, newspapers and magazines produced by high-school and college students. The association designates First Place, Second Place and Third Place award winners based on a points system.

The Collegian and The Lyre, the college's award-winning literary magazine, both are advised by L. Wayne Johns, associate professor of English. Johns, who joined the faculty in 2007, holds a B.A. from St. Andrews Presbyterian College, an M.F.A. from Georgia State University and a Ph.D. from Florida State University.

Greensboro College, an independent, coeducational college affiliated with the United Methodist Church, is an academic and social community that unites the liberal arts and Judeo-Christian values in an atmosphere of diversity and mutual respect.

Founded in 1838 and located in downtown Greensboro, the college enrolls about 1,250 students from 32 states, the District of Columbia and 24 nations in its undergraduate liberal-arts program and four master's degree programs. In addition to rigorous academics and a well-supported Honors program, the school features a 16-sport NCAA Division III athletic program and dozens of service and recreational organizations.
