Greensboro College senior Alexis Sox joins the Getting to Know Podcast

This season, the Greensboro College softball team relied on both experience and veteran leadership that ultimately led them to the championship series of the USA South conference tournament. In a season that saw sustained success for the team with a 28-15 overall record, as well as a 13-5 record in the USA South Conference, Alexis Sox, a fifth-year senior from Burlington, NC, was a key component to the Pride's offense this spring.
Sox spent much of this season ranked in the top five in doubles among all NCAA Division III players, and currently holds the Greensboro College program record for doubles. She capped off her career as a 2024 USA South All Conference 1st team selection at first base. While Sox is no stranger to success in her career at Greensboro College, she ultimately credits her teammates, parents, and coaches for supporting her throughout her entire career.
From an early age, Sox grew up at the softball field in Burlington, North Carolina. She remembers watching both her parents and grandparents play both baseball and softball. Eventually, travel softball began, and the Sox family spent many weekends traveling around the state to play games as she fell in love with the sport. In 6th grade, Sox vividly recalls watching the Softball Women's College World Series on TV. It was then that she ultimately decided to pursue softball in college. Although Greensboro College was not initially on her list during the recruiting process, Sox remembers feeling at home the moment she stepped on campus for her tour. Sox, a self-proclaimed family-oriented person, knew Greensboro College would be the perfect fit. Her parents and family were close enough to see all of her games. She credits both her mother and father for reminding her that even without softball, Sox needed to find a college where she could be happy and successful both academically and personally apart from Division III athletics. At Greensboro College, she was able to find a healthy balance between athletics and academics that was maintained by her coaches and professors. Sox recalls always being valued as a person, and not just an athlete or a student.
In a career characterized by so much success, it is important to highlight Sox's resiliency. In navigating a coaching change as well as changing positions in the infield, Sox learned how to deal with failure and lean on others around her. In September of 2021, Coach Meredith Mills was hired to lead the Greensboro College program. Although Sox admits she was nervous at first, the coaching transition allowed for a complete change and reboot of the team's culture. Mills' fire and passion for Greensboro College softball is contagious and evident in every member of the team both on and off the field. Most recently, Sox transitioned from the catcher position to first base. This process allowed her to lean on both her teammates as well as her parents, who encouraged her to make mistakes, trust in her preparation, and most importantly, have fun in her last year. Eventually, this led to a highly successful fifth-year campaign. Her game-winning home run against Meredith College in the regular season is one of her favorite memories of her career.
There is no doubt Sox's career can be defined by her on-the-field success, records, and numerous accolades. However, she admits it will be the memories made with her teammates off the field, on bus rides, and walking around campus that she will miss the most. Greensboro College Softball was ultimately a way for Sox to learn how to work through adversity, deal with failure, and find her own voice as a leader. Graduating with a bachelor's degree in health sciences, a minor in Biology, as well as an additional major in Exercise and Sports Studies, those leadership qualities will certainly be applicable as she pursues a career in the healthcare field with an eventual goal to attend Physician Assistant school.
When she is not on the softball field, Sox enjoys exploring Greensboro's city life with her teammates and family. She frequents popular Greensboro restaurants such as US Sushi and Little Ari's and has fond memories of eating at KickBack Jacks with her family after games. In closing, Sox reminded current and future student athletes to take care of themselves, as well as take advantage of the unique opportunity to be a Division III student-athlete at Greensboro College.
