Greensboro College's Art Department to Feature Senior Art Exhibit
Greensboro, NC (04/07/2022) — The Greensboro College Art Department will be hosting an art exhibit with work created by three of its seniors (under separate titles), between April 19, 2022-May 8, 2022 at the Anne Rudd Galyon Gallery in the Cowan Building on the college's campus. The exhibition is free and open to the public. The exhibition will also open with a digital show on the Instagram page of the Greensboro College Art Department (@greensborocollegeart) on April 17, 2022.
An Artists' Talk with the three students will occur on April 19 between 4 - 4:30 p.m., which is also the College's school-wide Showcase Day, at the Galyon Gallery.
The Exhibits:
"Dear _______" by Elizabeth Hawkins
"Dear ________," is the title of Elizabeth Hawkins' senior exhibition at Greensboro College. Her work explores and exposes her struggles with depression and anxiety in a Neo-Expressionist style, encouraging viewers to look into the mind of someone who struggles with its harsh realities - unfortunately, relatable for too many people. The dozen mixed media paintings include acrylic and oil paint, as well as additions of sawdust and vinyl, to create a sense of heaviness and dread, almost to the point of a paralyzed rigor mortis, but still living.
Hawkins says, "Expressing my pain and my sadness through art helps me to see my pain in a physical aspect. I can see that what I'm feeling and thinking is legitimate and not a figment of my imagination. What I feel is real and my art solidifies that."
Elizabeth lives in Randolph County, NC. She is graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Mind Your Manners by Jonathan Abney
Jonathan Abney's early foray into humor at Vandalia Elementary and Hairstone Middle School in Greensboro eventually led to his senior art exhibition, Mind Your Manners. Abney's comics have appeared in The Collegian (GC's college paper), and he has taken commissions for several kinds of imagery. But, this is his first featured gallery show, and he's ecstatic to be able to present his art to a larger public! His work includes recent works of the past year, and some art specifically made for this presentation. The work spans digital art, paintings, and mixed media.
Jonathan will be earning his Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in 2D Design.
The Colors of Water by Jaylen Walker
Jaylen Walker is also earning his Bachelor of Arts and hails from Columbia, SC.
His show, The Colors of Water, focuses on what he calls "the Healthy Environmental Mindset", with hints at societal mistakes which are harming our environment and the animals that inhabit it. The most common theme is the repeated and disturbing acts of littering and dumping of trash into nature throughout the centuries, thus changing its colors. The work shows a mix of various media, including acrylics, watercolor, egg tempera, and other illustrative materials, many coming from his work in the Methods and Materials course. He also has designed an installation featuring furniture and natural objects for this show.
