Greensboro College to Host the North Carolina Governor's School West in the Summer of 2024

by Matthew Johnson

Greensboro, NC (01/16/2024) — Greensboro College has been named as the new west campus for the North Carolina Governor's School. Selected by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and Superintendent Catherine Truitt, Greensboro College will host hundreds of academically gifted high school students as part of the residential summer program, starting this June.

"Greensboro College is pleased to partner with the NCDPI to host the Governor's School West during the summer of 2024 and potentially for the long term," said Greensboro College President Lawrence D. Czarda. "Having 400 of the most academically talented North Carolina high school students and 50 chosen faculty is a perfect fit for our historic downtown Greensboro campus."

The North Carolina Governor's School is a four-week summer residential program for high-achieving students from throughout the state. Former Governor Terry Sanford founded the Governor's School of North Carolina in 1963. The program, which does not involve credit, tests, or grades, is the oldest statewide summer residential program for talented and motivated high school students in the nation.

"Being the host for Governor's School West is another tangible commitment demonstrating Greensboro College's support of K-12 students in North Carolina today and just as we have throughout our 186-year history," said Czarda.

Each North Carolina school system, charter school, and private school is allotted a certain number of nominations based on its 10th- and 11th-grade populations. There are 10 specialization areas for nomination: English, Spanish, mathematics, natural sciences, social science, art, choral music, instrumental music, theater, and dance. NCDPI is currently reviewing more than 1,900 applications from high school students from across the state, with approximately 800 of the state's most academically gifted and talented rising high school juniors and seniors to be selected for the 2024 session.

Local school superintendents, along with directors of charter and private schools initially nominate students to attend Governor's School. The program is open to rising seniors, with exceptions made to include rising juniors in selected performing arts areas.

Faculty and staff of the Governor's School include distinguished teachers and professionals from public and private schools, colleges, and universities across the country. Others are independent artists and scholars. To further enrich the students' experience, many faculty members are in residence on campus as well.
