Greensboro College Football Falls 32-22 to Roanoke on Saturday

Greensboro, NC (09/14/2025) — The Greensboro College Football team (1-1) got a historic effort on the ground from freshman Kyjuan Westmoreland on Saturday, but the team would fall to Roanoke (2-0) 32-22 in the 2025 home opener.

Westmoreland totaled 173 rushing yards, the most for any Greensboro player since Tolan Jones ran for 180 yards against Methodist in 2017. His 173 yards is the 7th most all-time in a single game in program history.

Roanoke got the scoring started in the first quarter on a 33 yard field goal by Ethan Cyr. Greensboro got their offense going in the second quarter when Karee Dykes scored from 6 yards out to give the Pride a 7-3 advantage.

Later in the quarter, a bad snap from Greensboro led to a fumble recovery in the end zone for the Maroons, but the extra point was blocked and returned for a two-point conversion by Jerrell Thomas to tie the game, 9-9.

With 1:09 to go in the first half, Westmoreland scored his first of two rushing touchdowns on the day, this one from from 2 yards out. However, Roanoke blocked the extra point and returned it for a two-point conversion themselves, as Greensboro took a 15-11 lead before the half.

The Pride held the lead until just over 5 minutes to play in the third quarter, when Roanoke scored on a touchdown pass to Khamari Garner to take an 18-15 advantage. Early in the fourth quarter, Roanoke scored again and took a 10 point lead.

Greensboro's offense struggled most of the second half, and the Maroons would continue to take advantage. A touchdown run with 10:51 to play extended the lead for Roanoke to 32-15.

Less than a minute later, however, Westmoreland scored on a 60 yard touchdown run to keep Greensboro within striking distance. Late in the fourth, the Pride put together a strong drive that was stalled out on fourth down at the Roanoke 1 yard line, and that would seal the deal for the Maroons.

Turnovers were the main story for the Pride, totaling 3 interceptions and 3 lost fumbles.

Offensively, Westmoreland also had 3 receptions for 46 yards, capping off a 219 yard day in total. Shamar Privette had a 5 catch game, while KJ Brown had 4 receptions. Karee Dykes had 45 yards on the ground with a touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, Will Pailthorpe led the team with 8 tackles, with 2 tackles for loss. Freshman Davarius Jessie had 2 sacks, while Ziere Ray had 1.5 sacks. The defense had 5 sacks in total. Thomas and Tyler Lee-Thaxton each had an interception.

Greensboro will travel to FCS opponent Davidson College next Saturday for a 7:00 pm match up with the Wildcats, which will also be the final non-conference game of the season.
