Sims Delivers Big in Second Half, Defense Dominates in Greensboro College Football's Win Over Guilford
Greensboro, NC (09/07/2025) — It was a historic night for Greensboro College Football (1-0) as they defeated Guilford College (0-1) 21-7 on Saturday night. The win is the first against the Quakers since 2012, also the last time the team started a season 1-0.
The game started with a bang as freshman Sincere McIntyre took the opening kickoff to the house to give the Pride and early 7-0 advantage. Guilford would tie the game 7-7 after a touchdown by Caleb Robles from 8 yards out, and the score would be tied after the first quarter of play.
Neither team could score in the second quarter, as Guilford missed a 43-yard field goal attempt as time expired in the quarter. Greensboro had trouble getting their offense going throughout the half, as they struggled on the ground and through the air.
The second half was a different story for the Pride, however, as the defense continued to dominate and the offense began to show signs of life. A drive that began with 4:11 to go in the third quarter saw senior quarterback Josh Sims enter the game and give Greensboro the spark they needed to punch the ball into the end zone to take a 14-7 lead. Sims helped drive the offense down the field and threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Karee Dykes to give Greensboro momentum heading into the final quarter.
After another long offensive drive early in the fourth, Greensboro would miss a 30-yard field goal and open the door for the Quakers to get back into the game. However, the Greensboro defense forced a punt on the ensuing drive and gave the ball back to the offense. Late in the fourth quarter, Sims and the offense put together one final scoring drive to seal the win, as Sims connected with sophomore tight end Matt Kidd on an 11-yard touchdown pass to make the score 21-7.
Jay Law, who had 2 interceptions on the night, picked off Guilford quarterback Luke Hyatt with under 2 minutes left in the game to put the Quakers away for good. Greensboro would take the Soup Bowl victory and get their 2025 season off to a strong start.
Defensively, Frank Walker had a big night, totaling 8 tackles and 1 sack, along with 2 tackles for loss. Kalil Marcus helped the cause with 6 tackles on the night, while Caden Jeter had 3 tackles and a sack.
Offensively, Karee Dykes led the team in receiving with 3 catches for 30 yards and a touchdown. He also led Greensboro in rushing, carrying the ball 11 times for 26 yards.
Head coach Tyler Card said after the game, "I'm just so proud of these guys the way they came back and finished that game...we were resilient, we fought, and we finished."
Greensboro will play their home opener next Saturday as they host Roanoke College in a battle of two 1-0 teams. Kickoff at Pride Field is set for 12:00 pm.
